There were fewer mass layoffs in Colorado during January compared to January 2011, according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Mass layoffs are defined as 50 or more workers. Last month, there were five mass layoffs, with 556 employees terminated by Colorado companies.

In January 2011, there were 11 mass layoffs totaling 1,126 employees. The report does not identify the companies.

Colorado’s January 2012 figures are the lowest mass layoff total since March 2011 and the lowest number of employees laid off since August 2011.
