Margaret Kelly is CEO of Re/Max in Denver. “So many words that come to mind when I think about being unsinkable in business,” she says. “I think the biggest thing in my mind that makes you unsinkable is hiring people better than yourself, surrounding yourself with the best possible and then empowering them to do the job. That makes the whole company unsinkable.”
In 1990, one of the top vice presidents of Re/Max founder and Chairman Dave Liniger told him about a hotshot financial analyst she wanted to promote.
“This VP came up to me and said, ‘You have a woman who’s working in the accounting department, and we’re totally wasting her talents. She could be running the company one day.’” Liniger said.
That financial analyst, Margaret Kelly, became the company’s CEO in 2005.
When Kelly was growing up in Michigan, she didn’t even want to go to college, let alone run an international company.
